Fractional Chief of Staff

What is a
Fractional
Chief of Staff?
A Chief of Staff is an executive level professional, who interweaves throughout the organization to help ensure clarity of priorities, improve organizational communications, support and align directives, and to cultivate a winning company culture, for the collective purpose of improved productivity.
A Fractional Chief of Staff can add tremendous value to an organization without the cost burden of a full-time person.
About P. Brendon Lundberg
Hello, I am Brendon Lundberg. I am an experienced executive who has built a career helping grow companies. I have direct experience in nearly all aspects of a company’s operations from sales and marketing, customer support, operations, human resources, budgeting and finance, capitalization, and executive leadership.
The first half of my career was spent as an early-stage employee in various start-up companies, where I played key revenue growth roles, helping those companies become growth award winning, and eventually moving on to substantial exits. Since 2014, I was a founder or co-founder of several disruptive start-ups. Whether as a senior executive or as individual contributor, I know what it takes to cultivate a winning, productive, and culturally aligned organization. I have built a reputation as an excellent communicator, collaborator and champion of team development to drive to high performance.
The pressures of executive leadership, particularly those of CEO, are unique and often very lonely. Those pressures are ones I understand personally, having lived it myself for well over a decade. I also know how to listen, identify and develop a leadership and communication plan in which the executive leaders’ vision is understood, articulated and adopted across the executive team and down throughout the organization. This type of alignment and coordination will always translate to a better result in the market, and a more enjoyable place to work.
While most of my career has been in healthcare, I have a sound comprehension of the mechanics of business operations, and the expertise of communication which transcend industry.
Outside of work, I play guitar in two bands, I paint, and I love to travel. I have lived abroad and speak conversationally fluent Spanish. I would love to learn to sail.

How It Works
1
Step 1 - Exploratory Stage
The Chief of Staff is a versatile and dynamic role with duties that depend on the needs of the organization. Following a proven framework, we’ll gain clarity of key organizational needs, priorities, frustrations, and break points. This is typically accomplished through an assessment and set of conversations with the company’s CEO and other executive leaders. Following this Exploratory Stage, we’ll determine a mutual fitness of working together.
Assessment – the assessment includes a survey and questionnaire given in-person or via video call to each member of the executive team, starting with the CEO. This assessment can be extended to include a board of directors, and/or primary owner(s) if not the same as the CEO or other executives. This assessment is designed to identify valuable information about the organization, including a general company SWOT and financial analysis, but also cultivate a clearer understanding of alignment, mission, vision, values and the strength and efficiencies of the interplay between the leadership team and the company’s departments.
Report of Findings – Based upon the assessment, a report of findings will be prepared and shared in full with the CEO, the board of directors, or the entire executive team, as chosen by the client. A summary report and key takeaways will be shared with everyone. This report of findings will lay out key areas of focus for an engagement as a fractional Chief of Staff.

Step 2 - Engagement
Following the assessment and report of findings, if we decide to work together, a proposal with goals and initiatives will be mutually established. An engagement is put in place based upon how many hours per month you want a Fractional Chief of Staff available and if it will be onsite, virtual, or a combination. The contract will dictate if this Fractional Chief of Staff reports to the Board of Directors, the CEO, or the whole executive team.
The engagement will be for three months. A three-month contract is the minimum, but it should be expected that that initial three-months will automatically roll into another three-month engagement perpetually, unless either party decides to terminate, which must be given no less than 15 days in prior to the conclusion of the end of the three-month period. This will allow us the structure to focus on longer-term relationship, which is usually necessary to achieve optimal results, while also allow an easy and clear terminus for either party if is not a productive fit.
If after two consecutive three-month periods a longer-term engagement is desired, it can be structured and contracted.

Step 3 - Long Term Needs
The Fractional Chief of Staff structure is designed to give the organization as much value while keeping costs contained to a part-time contract. If any time the organization desires a full-time Chief of Staff, Brendon can help recruit or identify from within the organization a well-suited full-time individual, train that person, and stay on until the new full-time Chief of Staff is fully up to speed to perform their duties with little disruption.
